Riesling Fellowship

Preparations for the third Wines of Germany Riesling Fellowship are now well under way and invitations are to be sent out shortly to the German Riesling producers nominated by the panel of UK wine journalists and sommeliers.
This year the fellowship will play host to Professor Schultz from leading oenological research centre Geisenheim. He will present the latest findings of his research into the effect of climate change on the Riesling grape.
Sixty key international industry figures involved with and instrumental to the UK success of the Riesling grape have been emailed a ‘save the date’ note of the event, and a number of positive replies have already been received.

A total of six wines were tasted from varying German wine producing regions and of different styles, including a Pinot Noir from the Ahr:
• 2006 Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) QbA Dry, Meyer-Näkel, Ahr
• 2006 Wachenheimer Riesling trocken, Bürklin-Wolf, Pfalz
• 2006 Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Grosses Gewächs trocken, Keller, Rheinhessen

• 2003 Rausch Riesling Spätlese, Zilliken, Mosel
• 2004 Rudesheimer Kirchenpfad Auslese, Josef Leitz, Rheingau
In order to ensure the tasting was relevant for the sommeliers, the wines selected were all readily available from on-trade suppliers serving the greater London area including The WineBarn, Tanners, Justerini & Brooks, Berry Bros & Rudd, and The Wine Keller. Thank you to all those on-trade suppliers who generously donated samples for the tasting.
In addition to the sommeliers, which included representatives from Maze, Petrus, Galvin at Windows and Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill, Carola Keller from the Deutsche Weininstitut attended. Eva Fricke, cellar master at Weingut Leitz was on hand to introduce her wine, as was Juergen Keller from the Wine Keller and Francois Mathis from Justerini & Brooks.
Following the tasting, a fantastic breakfast was laid on by Walter Speller of Le Pont de la Tour and then the majority of attendees were ferried over to LIWF by taxi for the 2008 fair.
Wines of Germany will be running additional tastings throughout the remainder of 2008 and further details of these will be announced shortly.

Sixty Second Sommelier Update
The first of ‘Sixty Second Sommelier Update’ newsletters was sent out at the beginning of June. The newsletter, which was distributed by email to over 500 sommelier contacts across the country, highlighted Wines of Germany’s activities in the on-trade including breakfast tastings, trips to Germany and the opportunity to be profiled on our website. Sommeliers will continue to receive updates relating to the on-trade activity on a bi-monthly basis and it is hoped this will generate increased interest in and awareness of German wine and increase attendance at on-trade events organised by Wines of Germany.
In addition to the sommelier newsletter, consumers who have registered through the website, www.winesofgermany.co.uk, also received the first in a series of bi-monthly newsletters detailing consumer sampling events and highlighting what’s new on the website.
For more information on these newsletters, please contact Alicia Mellish at Wines of Germany on 020 7759 7405 or by email: alicia.mellish@phippspr.co.uk.
Sommelier Trip
A group of London-based sommeliers will visit the Pfalz, Rheingau and Mosel regions from August 17-21. Visiting Weingut Leitz, Weingut Molitor and Weingut Dr. Loosen, among others, it promises to be an informative and educational trip for the sommeliers, who come from top venues, such as Maze, Petrus, Hakkasan and Galvin at Windows.
